Vendel Helmet (Viking)
8th to 9th C
This helmet is designed after the helmet of a Vendel chieftan. The examples shown have optional
slat-back construction and
brass-work, and have been left "rough from the hammer". They have also been blued, which
really makes the brass-work stand out.
The first helmet I call "Odin". The brass motif has his 2 ravens, Thought and Memory, on
the skull panels, and his spear is depicted on the nasal. The stylized brass eyebrows are a common feature
of Nordic helmets.
The second helmet I call "Thor". The nasal and applied brass are in the shape of Thor's hammer,
Mjollnir.
The standard version of this helmet has a solid back, no brass-work, and is polished to a bright satin finish.
